As old as the road to Kralingen…
Capelle aan den IJssel is 'as old as the road to Kralingen'. This expression is the South Holland variation of the familiar expression ‘as old as history’. Excavations show that there were buildings along the IJssel River as early as the 2nd century AC. The road to Kralingen connects Gouda to what is now Rotterdam. Along that road the characteristic Dutch meandering landscape of the town Capelle came into being, a town that was mainly comprised of fishermen and stonemasons.
